Located at 2248 South Bear Road, Decorah, IA, we host more than art classes. Events like music festivals, birdwatching, group hikes, celebrations and gatherings of all kinds take place here, and we're excited to welcome you to join us.

Summer Pottery Retreat
June 8-19, 2026
South Bear Pottery School is of direct lineage to the Bauhaus, Marguerite Wildenhain, and Pond Farm; this program implements the same forms and traditions passed down from that lineage. We offer hands-on experiences that connect art, nature, and community. This program includes high-quality instruction by South Bear alumni, and imparts the benefits of learning to throw on the kickwheel.

50th Anniversary Reunion 2026
June 20-21, 2026
2026 marks the 50th year of South Bear School in our current location. We are inviting folks to join us for a celebration of the anniversary with two days of arts demonstrations, presentations and lectures, live music, workshops, and film screenings. A catered meal will be available for the alumni lunch, and food trucks will be present for the evening. Mark your calendars for Saturday, the 20th and Sunday, the 21st of June, 2026! Gays and Faes Festival
May 29 - 31, 2026
An overnight pride, music, arts and camping festival featuring bands from around the Upper Midwest. "This is a place for radical self expression, vocal community support, and abundant love." More information will be available soon!

Midsummer's Eve Party
July 18, 2026
Join us on the Eve of Midsummer for the annual variety show at Southie. See live bands, drag performances, fire spinning routines, and more with karaoke and a bonfire to wrap up the evening. Camp out overnight for the full experience.
